The American Founders looked to the Torah as the source of the divine calling to make a free country. That is why they engraved a verse from the Torah on the American Liberty Bell: «Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof» (Leviticus 25:10). Nevertheless, the Torah is theocratic, meaning that God is the head of state and His laws of the land. One might say that the freest country ever established, America, was founded as both democratic and theocratic. Citizens are free to vote for their leaders and have freedom of speech, worship, and assembly. But it was assumed by the Founders that such a free republic could be maintained only if the people and their leaders derived their values from God (that is the God of the Bible).
