Resultatet av den nesten to timer lange telefonsamtalen mellom Xi Jinping og Joe Biden tyder på at USA gikk tomhendt fra møtet. Kina ville ikke gi konsesjoner og måten Biden ble avvist på viser et mer selvbevisst Kina.

Det gjelder også selve referatet av møtet. Der Washington serverte diplomatiske selvfølgeligheter, rommet den russiske versjonen mer direkte språk. Kina signaliserer at det ikke gidder spille Washingtons spill.

While China said generally it “stands for peace and opposes war” and hopes for a cessation of hostilities, it made no demand that Russia cease operations in Ukraine that have included horrific destruction and killing of civilians.

“All sides need to jointly support Russia and Ukraine in having dialogue and negotiation that will produce results and lead to peace,” the Chinese government said. “The US and NATO should also have dialogue with Russia to address the crux of the Ukraine crisis and ease the security concerns of both Russia and Ukraine.”

Kina sier rett ut at det er mot sanksjonsregimet:

“Sweeping and indiscriminate sanctions would only make the people suffer,” the Chinese statement said. “If further escalated, they could trigger serious crises in global economy and trade, finance, energy, food, and industrial and supply chains, crippling the already languishing world economy and causing irrevocable losses.

Det hvite hus hadde på forhånd varslet at det ville advare Kina mot å trosse sanksjonene. Men budskapet synes ikke å ha gått inn. Tvert i mot. Det er ikke spor av innrømmelser i det kinesiske referatet.
