Inflasjonen i USA økte i januar til 7,5 prosent på årsbasis, som er den høyeste prisstigningen i landet siden februar 1982, viser tall fra føderale amerikanske myndigheter torsdag.

Dermed har inflasjonen økt med et halvt prosentpoeng siden desember, skriver Wall Street Journal.

Prisene på matvarer har økt med 7 prosent, energiprisene med 27 prosent, og bruktbiler med 40,5 prosent siden januar i fjor.

Spørsmålet alle stiller seg, er hvor lenge inflasjonen forblir høy.

Prices for autos, household furniture and appliances, as well as for other long-lasting goods, continue to drive much of the inflationary surge, fueled by pandemic-related supply-and-demand imbalances. Most economists expect the dynamic to fade as businesses adapt and demand normalizes. But it isn’t clear when supply snarls will ease enough to take pressure off prices, particularly because of recent disruptions from the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

I mellomtiden kan USAs sentralbank bli nødt til å heve rentenivået.

“Inflation is at a new 40-year high and it isn’t just the rate that should be worrying the Federal Reserve, but also the breadth of corporate pricing power,” said James Knightley, chief international economist at ING. “With wages, commodity prices and supply-chain strains all contributing, the Fed will need to respond aggressively.”

I næringslivet tviler man imidlertid på at det vil dempe prisveksten i det korte løp:

In corporate offices, concerns about inflation loom large, according to a survey of 133 CEOs of large U.S. companies conducted by the Conference Board, a business research group.

Nearly 3 in 4 respondents said Fed rate increases were unlikely to immediately curb inflation, with most citing the role of supply-chain woes and a large minority of executives pointing to the need to raise prices to cover increasing wage bills. Some 72% said they expect to pass on higher labor and transportation costs to customers within the next 12 months.

En økning i husleieprisene har også bidratt til den stigende inflasjonen, skriver Wall Street Journal. Både strøm- og bensinprisene har bidratt til kraftig økende energipriser, opplyser New York Post.
