Italias statsminister Mario Draghi, som er vertskap for G20-møtet i Roma, åpnet lørdag arrangementet med en tale der han avviste nasjonalisme og alenegang, og formante til multilateral samhandling for å løse verdens problemer.

Etter den italienske statsministerens oppfatning splitter nasjonalismen verden i en svært farlig tid, rapporterer New York Times.

“The pandemic has kept us apart — as it did with all our citizens — and even before, we faced protectionism, unilateralism, nationalism,” said Mr. Draghi, speaking in English at the head of an oval-shaped table of world leaders. “But the more we go with all our challenges, the more it is clear that multilateralism is the best answer to the problems we face today.”

“In many ways,” he said, “it is the only possible answer.”

“Going it alone is simply not an option,” Mr. Draghi said.

Draghis uttalelser var en klar avvisning av tilnærmingsmåten både til USAs forrige president Donald Trump, men også Russlands president Vladimir Putin og Kinas president Xi Jinping, som begge glimret med sitt fravær i Roma, skriver den amerikanske avisen.

Den europeiske planen for økonomisk gjenreisning etter pandemien har gjort det mulig å bygge «en ny økonomisk modell», sa Draghi, som ifølge New York Times har inntatt en lederrolle i Europa.

Regarding the pandemic, he said the world could now “finally look at the future with great — or with some — optimism.”

In Italy, vaccinations are well over 80 percent, and Mr. Draghi noted that more than 70 percent of the population of high-income countries had received at least one vaccine dose. That has cleared the way for economic rebounds, he said, in part thanks to a European recovery plan that has allowed countries to “reduce inequalities, promote sustainability” and build “a new economic model.”

Ifølge Bloomberg mener Draghi at denne nye modellen vil komme hele verden til gode:

While the pandemic isn’t over, “we can finally look at the future with great — or with some — optimism” as the global economy rebounds and governments seek to reduce inequalities and promote sustainability,” Draghi said. “Together, we are building a new economic model, and the world will be all the better for it.”

Draghi bemerker at sentralbankene har en rolle i denne nye modellen, skriver Corriere della Sera:

Ifølge Draghi er en ny økonomisk modell i ferd med å bli født som vil komme alle til gode takket være vaksinekampanjene og «koordinerte handlinger fra sentralbankene».

Italias statsminister tok også til orde for å eliminere handelshindringer og styrke leveransekjedene, skriver New York Times.
