Trump undertegnet to beslutninger tirsdag som berører Hongkong: Den første kansellerer Hongkongs særstilling økonomisk, den andre er en lov som innfører sanksjoner mot alle som krenker Hongkongs selvstyre. Den er direkte rettet mot kommunist-Kinas nye sikkerhetslov for Hongkong.

During a press conference in the White House Rose Garden, Trump announced that he had signed into law the Hong Kong Autonomy Act and also put his signature on an executive order that ends the United States’ preferential treatment of Hong Kong.

Dermed signaliserer Trump at hans administrasjon ikke kommer til å stå passivt å se på at 7,4 millioner mennesker mister sin frihet.

«I signed legislation and an executive order to hold China accountable for its oppressive actions against the people of Hong Kong,” Trump said. “No administration has been tougher on China than this administration.”

Beijing liker ikke disse tonene. Første del av handelsavtalen, som ble undertegnet i januar, kan stå i fare.

Loven som heter Accountability Act, ansvarsloven, er tidligere vedtatt av begge kamre i Kongressen. Trump har dermed full ryggdekning for å ta et oppgjør med kommunist-Kina.

Trump’s signature on the Hong Kong Accountability Act comes after the legislation was passed overwhelmingly in both the Senate and the House earlier this summer. The act imposes sanctions on entities that help violate Hong Kong’s autonomy and financial institutions that do business with them, and comes as a response to the passage of a «national security» law that tightened Beijing’s grip on Hong Kong — which has been semi-autonomous from the mainland since 1997.

Pandemien har beredt grunnen for et slikt oppgjør. Trump har kalt corona-viruset for Wuhan eller Kina-viruset flere ganger den senere tid, vel vitende om at det har politiske implikasjoner. Kina kan ikke slippe unna å bli stilt til ansvar.
