Sjefredaktøren for Los Angeles Times, Norman Pearlstine, sier at ordet plyndring (looting) har  eller kan ha rasistiske konnotasjoner. Det gikk opp for ham da han hørte på avisens svarte medarbeidere.

Den senere tid har spørsmålet om svarte journalister i redaksjonene vært oppe til debatt. Pearlstine deltok i en debatt på PBS NewsHour om bråk slik som i New York Times nylig, kunne vært unngått hvis det hadde vært flere svarte journalister der.

Pearlstine fortalte om erfaringene de har gjort i hans avis:

«One of the active debates we had over the past week was about the use of the word “looting” to describe the destruction of property,» Pearlstein said. «The feeling among the black journalists at The Los Angeles Times who frankly educated the rest of us to the fact that looting had a pejorative racist connotation and that comparing it to the kind of behavior of the police and the kind of behavior that we witnessed really was a false equivalency and yet it was one that we were making as journalists if you picked up a copy of our paper.»

Det finnes en egen forening for svarte journalister og lederen mente ordet «riot», opptøyer, faller i samme kategori.

National Association of Black Journalists president Dorothy Tucker called the conversation «interesting,» adding that the word «riot» falls in a «similar» category as the word «looting.

«I appreciate the fact that you’re having that kind of discussion at the LA Times,» Tucker told Pearlstein.

Det er uklart hva som er rasistisk ved ord som beskriver handlinger som vi har sett fra USA: Folk som knuser ruter,, dører, stormer butikker og tar det som finnes. Hvilke andre ord skal journalister bruke?

Pearlstein trakk frem en av de kjente journalistene fra Vietnam-krigen, David Halberstam, og sa han lot meningene komme til syne i reportasjene. Det var et eksempel til etterfølgelse, mente han.

Pearlstein recalled the reporting during the Vietnam War, citing journalist David Halberstam who he said was among those who were «letting their opinions into their journalism,» something he thought was «for the better.»
