A customs officer has been shot dead and two other police offers injured at Saint Jean du Var near Toulon during an operation targetting arms traffickers. A man has been arrested.

The police involved were conducting a surveillance operation of a «transaction».

There is no suggestion there is a terror link but France has called for a crackdown on the illegal arms trade in the wake of the Paris attacks.
