I sin årlige tale om unionens tilstand, benyttet EU-kommisjonens president José Manuel Barroso onsdag anledningen til å minne om at det til neste år er hundre år siden utbruddet av 1. verdenskrig, og i samme forbindelse filleriste euroskeptikere som måtte ønske å reversere den europeiske integrasjonen.

Man risikerer å gjenta historien, mener en ikke urovekkende elegant Barroso.

In a thinly veiled reference to those like David Cameron, the Prime Minister, who want to roll back the EU’s powers, Mr Barroso said that next year’s centenary of the First World War should be a reminder of the «Union’s» role of keeping the peace in Europe.

«Let me say to all those who rejoice in Europe’s difficulties and who want to roll back our integration and go back to isolation: the pre-integrated Europe of the divisions, the war, the trenches, is not what people desire and deserve,» he said.

«The European continent has never in its history known such a long period of peace as since the creation of the European Community. It is our duty to preserve and deepen it.»

Den britiske europarlamentarikeren Martin Callanan, som representerer toryene, kjøpte ikke Barrosos påstand om at EU er det eneste bolverket mot barbariet, ei heller om at det er anti-europeisk ikke å ønske en en politisk union.

«No one seriously believes that anymore. We need a new eurorealist direction with different ideas. One that says that patriotism is healthy. To be proudly German or French or Polish is not necessarily to be anti-European. The concepts are not antagonistic,» he said.

«The real anti-Europeans are those whose idea of change in the EU only means moving faster in the old failed direction. The real nationalists are those who force us to accept a European nation that actually in reality nobody wants.»

Barrosos svar viser hans totalitære tilbøyelighet, og sier det meste om hvordan unionen fungerer.

Mr Barroso responded to Mr Callanan by saying that his views would exclude him from senior EU office, such as the job of commisison president and accused the Conservatives of pandering to Ukip.

EUs ledelse er dogmatisk, tåler ikke kritikk, og er uten evne til selvkorrigering. Med det representerer den en større trussel mot unionen enn britiske konservative. Et ja til fortsatt EU-medlemskap i den britiske folkeavstemningen som er tillyst i 2017, risikerer å bli a hard sell i fravær av kursendring i unionen.
