David Cameron leverte en kraftig advarsel til den pakistanske regjering under en tale i Bangalore, India: Pakistan kan ikke utad late som landet bekjemper terror og i hemmelighet støtte terror. Det må velge. Talen vil bli svært dårlig mottatt i Islamabad, også fordi den ble holdt i India.

Var det de historiske båndene mellom India og Storbritannia som gjorde at Cameron lot seg rive med? Etterpå forsøkte Downing Street å dempe innholdet.

Cameron snakket til ansatte ved en teknologibedrift, som det er mange av i Bangalore. Men det var først da han fikk et spørsmål fra salen, at han ble eksplisitt om Pakistans ansvar.

Publikummeren viste til avsløringer av at Pakistan støtter Talibans krig mot den afghanske hæren og vestlige styrker i Afghanistan.

Mr Cameron said that the issue was one that he was extremely concerned about, adding that he had already discussed the problem with US President Barack Obama and would do so also with Manmohan Singh, his Indian counterpart.
He then went on: «We should be very, very clear with Pakistan that we want to see a strong, stable and democratic Pakistan.
“We can not tolerate in any sense the idea that this country is allowed to look both ways and is able, in any way, to promote the export of terror, whether to India or whether to Afghanistan or anywhere else in the world.
“That is why this relationship is important. It should be a relationship based on a very clear message: that it is not right to have any relationship with groups that are promoting terror.
“Democratic states that want to be part of the developed world cannot do that. The message to Pakistan from the US and the UK is very clear on that point.»

Cameron mente nok også Pakistans rolle som «hub» for de fleste terrorplaner og anslag som er avslørt i Storbritannia og andre steder.

Men uttalelsene berører også det store antall pakistanere i Storbritannia, som pleier en utstrakt og tett kontakt med hjemlandet. Pakistanere er ærekjære og mange vil nok føle seg støtt og provosert over denne måten å omtale Pakistans regjering på.

Downing Street forsøkte å korrigere til at Cameron ikke mente regjeringen, men «krefter». Katta var likevel ute av sekken.

Dette er samme mannen som dagen før med overbevisning argumenterte for at Tyrkia må inn i EU.
