Insight: from Lebanon,

Daily Star Editorial, Lebanon, August 20

«The madness of a few among us who would do such deeds as the Baghdad bombing is the tip of an iceberg that permeates the wider circles of our cultures and countries … The atrocity and terror that have plagued Baghdad recently … emanate from a deeper wellspring of criminality that cannot be ended by military means alone, or by foreign intervention. The UN is one of the crucial parties that can help to address this sickening trend; the people of the Middle East are more crucial, and they must act now.»

Times Editorial, August 20, er heller ikke ille:

«Past disagreements about the wisdom of removing Saddam Hussein have been rendered irrelevant. The international community now has a common task in rebuilding Iraq, politically as well as physically. The remnants of the Ba’athists are a threat to all members of the UN security council. While the Bush administration has been reluctant to ask the UN for military assistance, the UN has held back from making the offer because certain members thought this would provide ex post facto legitimacy for the war. All sides must pool resources … recognising that the shared cause is to defeat terrorism and provide security and progress for the people of Iraq.»

men Figaros leder må selvfølgelig take a stab at the US:

How did it come to this? President George Bush took the decision to invade Iraq under the influence of a powerful lobby of … neoconservatives … [who] are very intelligent and all share a sincere passion for geopolitics. They believe the best of all possible worlds is the one in which America uses its power to impose its own views and models of social organisation, regardless of what other nations might feel … By betraying the Rooseveltian ideals on which the UN was founded, the Americans have betrayed themselves.»
